Indian Railways is the largest single entity employer in India. It is one of the largest railway networks in the world and also the world’s largest public utility corporation. The fact that it employs a workforce as large as 1.5 million employees explains the size of the organization. By virtue of growth in size, viz., addition of railroads, locomotives, passenger coaches, goods carriage, reservation and other services every year, the Indian railways generates tens of thousands of job opportunities every year.
Indian Railways is divided in to 16 railway zones, which is aimed at efficient carrying out of operations, construction and maintenance of coaches, railroad construction, recruitment and maintenance of workforce and other reasons. Each zone is headed by a General Manager who reports to the Railway Board. Under each zone there are Divisional Offices headed by Railway Divisional Managers who are reported by divisional officer cadres such as divisional officer engineering, mechanical divisional officers, electrical divisional officers, signal & telecommunication divisional officers, divisional accounting officers, divisional personnel officers, divisional operating officers, divisional officer for commercial operations and safety officers.
Railway Production Factories
Apart from the railway operations management the Indian Railways owns and operates six state of the art Production Units which are under the control of the Railway Ministry. The factories are highly employment intensive and create large number of new job opportunities every year. Railway Auxiliary Organizations
There are two independent organizations that work to upgrade railway facility by way of railroad electrification and plant modernization. They are also under the control of Railway Ministry.

Public Sector Corporations under Railway Ministry
Apart from these operational zones, Production Units and auxiliary organizations, a number of Public Sector Corporations which help Indian Railways to maintain, develop and modernize its systems. These corporations are also ideal employers for a variety of job applicants. These companies are:

Indian Railway Recruitments:
Indian Railways is an equal opportunity employer with recruitment norms is regulated and standard recruitment practices are followed. Recruitments of the Officers and Engineers are done by the UPSC through Engineers Service Examination and special recruitments. Recruitments to the lower categories of Indian Railways are done by separate Railway Recruitment Boards associated each railway zone.
