Vocational courses are short or medium term career oriented courses of up to 2 years training.
Vocational courses impart skills that has hot demand in many big industries or sometimes help incumbents become an entrepreneur. Some of these are simply up gradation of essential life skills that has high utility and commercial application. Obtaining such skills can become profitable vocations or enterprises themselves. Many of these employment oriented courses are low cost endeavor that middle class Indian families can afford and in return can give high returns to themselves and the national economy.

As part of national policy the government has included some industrial training programs and courses in the plan agenda. These courses are funded through various schemes of industrial training directorate. Industrial training institutes in India are established with a view to impart technical skills to young population to help them take part in the production process and find livelihood. There are conventional technical tradesman courses such as electrician training, plumber training, blacksmith, electronic repair and radio-television techniques, air conditioning, CNC mechanics, automobile repair and mechanics, shipwrecking, radio and signal equipment handling, etc.
