Teaching is regarded as one of most respectable professions in India.
The country's educational policy is formulated within the national planning framework which aims compulsory and free education for all. To meet the teaching needs the government has implemented a teacher training policy as part of the educational policy.
Teacher training institutes in India synergize the educational framework of the country by providing qualified teachers to the teaching institutions at all levels. There are an estimated 12,000 recognized teacher training institutions spread across the country imparting training to teachers at various levels. Thease teacher institutes are either affiliated to various universities or recognized by national level or state level teacher training certification boards or directorates.
To qualify as a teacher the aspirants need to take from the range of teacher training courses that suits to each level of teaching.
The objective of this section is to evaluate various career options in teaching and appropriate training programs available in India for qualifying as a teacher in each level.
National University of Education Planning and Administration (NUEPA) The NUEPA is a premier educational organization under Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India that is established to build synergies in research, planning and management of education. NEUPA is a deemed University that empowered to award its own degrees that include full time M.Phil, Ph.D, full time direct Ph.D and part time Ph.D Programs in educational policy, planning and administration from inter disciplinary social science perspective.
National Institute of Education:
Based at Delhi, the National Institute of Education offers academic programs including educational research, development of textbooks and material and teacher training in-service.
Regional Institutes of Education (RIE)
Under NCERT there are five Regional Institutes of Education to promote teacher education, research and training activities. These institutes offer 4-year integrated B.Sc-B.Ed., 2-year B.Ed., 1-year M.Ed. (elementary education) and 1-year diploma course in guidance and counseling.
State Councils of Education Research & Training
With an aim to promote education research activities specific to each state's particular situation, State councils were formed.
District Institutes of Education & Training (DIETs)
DIETs are teacher training institutes at district level to train teachers on various aspects of basic education.
